ceramics, motor, steel plates, cable

L/nk, Zwolle (NL), made possible by Mondriaan Fonds

'Ton Ton’ exhibits uncontrolled and imprecise movements, continuously rotating in a circular motion. From a height on the ceiling, he maintains a grip on his own power cable, with the tip touching the steel plates situated below. In this manner, he establishes an electrical connection and subsequently initiates movement. ‘Ton Ton’ moves repeatedly across and between the metal plates, occasionally losing contact and abruptly stopping, only to resume movement shortly thereafter. The ceramic robotic limbs rotate and turn, resulting in a rubbing and creaking sound as the clay discs interact. The tip of the cable rubs against the steel plates, causing them to oscillate. It appears as if the arm is scanning the plate, caught in an endless self-referential dance. Only the scratch marks on the plates and the wear and tear of the ceramic disks bear witness to the passage of time.
